Legal framework
Acts of Parliament in 1988 and 1992 established the legal status of the University as a higher education corporation and gave it powers to provide higher and further education, to carry out research and to publish the results. The Instrument and Articles of Government set out the key elements of the University's system of governance, including the roles and responsibilities of the Board of Governors, the Academic Board and the Vice Chancellor. Please also see the Governance section of this website.
A document entitled Legal Status and Powers of the University sets out the legal status of the University as a provider of higher education and the University's charitable status. Further information about the University's charitable status is available in the Governance section of this website.
For a copy of any of the above documents please contact the Information Governance team by email dpo@shu.ac.uk.
