Our Workshops and Therapeutic Groups are facilitated by one or two of our Wellbeing Practitioners. They provide you with strategies and skills to improve your wellbeing. There are a mixture of online and in person sessions - for online sessions, you will be sent a link 24 hours before the session starts.
What is the difference between a Workshop and a Therapeutic Group?
Workshops are one-off sessions to provide some information and skills about an issue with some opportunity to share experience if you want to. Any student can book a place and attend. You do not need to have registered with Student Wellbeing. For more information about workshop see the Workshops page.
Therapeutic Groups are run for six consecutive weeks and have the same students in them. This gives more time to build understanding and learn skills. Knowing that it is the same people can give you confidence about who you are spending time with and can make it feel more possible to share and to reflect. You can only be booking into a therapeutic group after speaking with a practitioner. For more information about these groups to to the Therapeutic Groups page.
Why attend?
The sessions can provide benefits that individual therapy may not. You have the opportunity to discuss and share your experience of an issue. Sessions can be rewarding, helping you realise you are not alone in your struggles, validate your experiences and reduce feelings of isolation. Seeing how other people tackle problems and supporting them provides you with different strategies and self-confidence to cope with your own problems.
What are the sessions like?
Sessions are only for Hallam students. The size depends on the session type, but they tend to be quite small. You will be asked to take part in some group exercises as we find people learn easier when they get to try things out. All participants will be asked to have their video on during online sessions.
Feedback from previous attendees has said that being able to share the experience with your peers is a valuable part of the session. You can ask questions throughout the session, but if you prefer you can wait until the break or the end.
If you don’t want to talk, that’s fine too. We will not force anyone to take part if they don’t feel comfortable.
Are group sessions confidential?
All group sessions are confidential and you don’t have to share any information. We ask that participants are respectful of others in the workshop and information must remain within the group.
Do I need to prepare?
You can have a pen and paper handy to make notes. In some of the sessions you will receive a course or e-workbook to guide you through the workshop. This will be provided by your practitioner. Some workshops have specific requirements e.g. appropriate clothing for yoga. Relevant information will be in the session description when you book.
What if I am late or if I can’t make it?
If you are unable to attend a workshop, please let us know in advance. We start the workshops promptly so please be punctual. It may also be hard to provide access to the online platform if you are late.
