Nervous about starting university? Try these tips

Going to university for the first time is exciting, but it’s also completely normal if uni nerves are starting to kick in. Here are some top tips.

Keep yourself informed

Have a look at your university email, the MyHallam pages and Welcome guide pages for any news on your course, teaching, support, timetables, Welcome Week and more. This way you can know what to expect and familiarise yourself with this new environment.

You can follow Sheffield Hallam and the Students’ Union on social media to stay updated on any events and opportunities that will help you get the most out of your time as a uni student.

Ask when you need help

When starting uni, you’ll get a lot of information in a short space of time and it’s ok to ask for help! Higher education is very different compared to college and high school and you might find yourself struggling to understand how this new system works.

Sheffield Hallam offers support for any issues you might have when you first arrive at university. Find out how to get support.

Get involved and have fun

Take the time to chat to your flatmates and course mates. Remember you’re all in the same boat when it comes to settling into uni life.

Whether you prefer to dive right in or do some research and get involved in activities in your own time, you’ll have chance to meet lots of new people by joining a society or sports club, volunteering, working for the Uni as a student ambassador, attending a fair or event (hosted by Sheffield Hallam or in the city), going on a trip organised by GoGlobal and exploring new places in one of the greenest, most affordable cities in the UK.
