Selection process for BA (Honours) Acting and Performance
What is our selection process?
After submitting your UCAS application, we may ask you to provide additional information to support your application. We make offers based on the information submitted and meeting the minimum academic requirements for entry onto the course.
Do I need to prepare anything in advance
The additional information you may be asked to provide will be in the form of a creative submission. You will be asked to submit one of the following pieces for us to assess:
- A monologue - this should be recorded on your mobile phone or camera and should last roughly 2-3 minutes. This is often referred to as a self-tape – additional guidance will be sent to you via email if you are invited to take part in the selection process.
- OR A review of a film or performance. This should be one side of A4 or can be done via a podcast
- OR Some ideas for a show you would like to put on or appear in
If you would like further guidance on the process, or you would like to arrange to have an audition over the phone or in person, please contact undergraduate admissions on 0114 225 5555 or email admissions@shu.ac.uk
We hope that by offering you a variety of ways to submit your work, you will find a means of showing your ability.
We will get back to you as soon as possible with the result of your application and some feedback.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for potential rather than the finished product.
In your submitted work we will be considering the following skills:
- Confidence
- Clarity
- Commitment
- Performance and presentation skills
Disability support
If you have a disability (this includes sensory and physical disabilities, dyslexia, mental health conditions and medical conditions) and you feel that you will need some support during the selection event process (for example, a sign language interpreter, note taker, materials provided in different format or wheelchair access), we strongly recommend that you contact the Events team on 0114 225 6737 or a.mallon@shu.ac.uk within three days of confirming your selection event.
The selection team will then be able to make any reasonable adjustments so that you can fully participate in the selection event without any disadvantage.
Disability advice whilst studying at the University
You may or may not have indicated that you have a disability on your application form. In either case, the Disabled Student Support Team is keen to hear from you. If you would like to meet or talk to an advisor to discuss, in confidence, possible support whilst studying, please ring +44 (0)114 225 3813 or email disability-support@shu.ac.uk
What decisions can be made on my application?
Our decision will be communicated via UCAS track, so please check your account regularly.
You will receive one of the following decisions.
Conditional offer for the course that you have applied for – you must fulfil certain criteria (usually based on the qualifications you are currently taking) before you can be accepted on the course. If the requirements are met, the offer becomes unconditional.
Unconditional offer for the course that you have applied for – usually made when you have already completed your qualifications and met the academic requirements we are asking for.
Unsuccessful – unfortunately we are not able to offer you a place on the course. We do not feel that you have the necessary skills or experience to be successful on one of our courses. However, this does not prevent you from applying in the future, should you undertake further study to develop your skills and experience.
