Applications for September 2024 entry

Key dates for overseas students starting their course in September 2024 will be available on this page soon.

Arrival in the UK and accommodation

Changes to Student visa requirements for students applying for courses starting from January 2024

From January 2024, the UK government's changes to Student visa requirements mean that international students in the UK will no longer be able to bring dependants on their student visa, unless they are studying a postgraduate research programme. See our visa and immigration advice page.

Visit our students with families page for more information on bringing dependants.

Support for travelling to the UK

Our International Experience Team provide extensive support for international students, in the lead up to and during the arrival and orientation period, and throughout your studies with us. They provide key pre-arrival information which can help you prepare before you arrive in the UK.

Airport pick up service

It is very important that you tell us when you will arrive in the UK. The airport pick-up service is available only at Manchester airport, and you can also read our guidance if you are arriving at a different UK airport.

Accommodation for overseas students

If you are studying with us and you are not bringing your family or dependants with you, we guarantee to find you somewhere to live and our partner halls offer a wide range of properties and budget types close to the university campuses.

We continue to work closely with partner accommodation providers to ensure they meet Government health and safety guidance - your safety and comfort are our key priorities.

Fees and Enrolment

Checking your fee status

If your fee status is unclear when you apply, our international admissions team will send you a fee status questionnaire. We use UKCISA guidelines to determine student fee status. Find out more.

Paying your tuition fees

If you have an international fee status and are a postgraduate taught or undergraduate applicant starting a new course in January 2024, you were required to pay £3,000 deposit before you received your Confirmation of Acceptance for Study (CAS) from Sheffield Hallam University. You will then also need to pay an additional £5,000 before you can enrol at the University.

It is recommended that payment of tuition fees is received by the University no later than 1 December 2023 to give enough time for the payment to be cleared. Payments received after this date may delay your enrolment.

Learn more about paying your tuition fees.

Vice-Chancellor's Award for applicants domiciled in South Asia, South East Asia and Nigeria

We are offering a Vice-Chancellor’s Award (a £2,000-£3,000 automatic tuition fee bursary) to applicants domiciled in South Asia, South East Asia and Nigeria, for full-time taught, undergraduate courses and postgraduate courses starting in January 2024. Terms and conditions apply.

Find out if you are eligible for the Vice Chancellor's Award.

You can browse all our courses on our online prospectus.

Enrolment

You will be asked to enrol in the weeks leading up to starting your course. Once you have enrolled fully, you will have full access to all university facilities and resources.

Visit our Enrolment guidance for international students page for step-by-step guidance on the enrolment process.

Changing courses

We are committed to being as flexible as possible for students to make the right choice for them. We will support applicants to change the courses to a suitable alternative in the run up to their start date, or as part of the deferral process. You can check course entry requirements and eligibility on our course pages.

Providing proof of English Language requirement

English language test centre availability may vary depending on local restrictions. We recommend checking qualification providers’ websites for the latest advice.

We are currently accepting a range of alternative tests should you be unable to take an IELTS test. If you need to study a pre-sessional English language course before starting your degree, we offer a range of online pre-sessional English courses.

Careers and employability

Employability support

The Careers and Employability Service provides specialist resources, advice and events for all students to help with career planning, finding a placement or part-time work, and making the most of your time while studying at Sheffield Hallam. This includes working in partnership with the International Experience Team to deliver a range of ‘Working in the UK’ information and Q&A sessions during the orientation programme you'll attend before you start your course.

We also offer the Hallam Achieve programme, specifically for international students, that is designed to enhance your career readiness and employability success by helping you to identify and articulate your skills, knowledge and experience in an appropriate and professional way. Through a series of interactive workshops, events and a mock interview, you will take ownership of your personal career journey, improve your confidence in navigating the recruitment process and shape your future success.

Graduate Immigration Route

The UK's Home Office launched a new Graduate Immigration Route for international students completing degree courses in the UK in summer 2021 – sometimes referred to as the 'post-study work visa'. Learn more about the Graduate Immigration Route.
