'I worked with lots of major fashion brands.'
In 2020, fashion design student Vick Batey won the national Fashion Concept Award at Graduate Fashion Week. She also graduated with a first-class degree.
How did the award come about?
My tutor put me forward for the award for my final year project Growing Up Northern. It looks at the changing role of women through the generations – the clothes are inspired by the idea of this 1960s girl who wants to be more than a housewife. I was shocked when they announced I’d won – I had to ask my mum: did they really say my name? It’s really nice to be recognised after all the time and effort I put in.
What kind of practical work did you experience on the course?
I worked with lots of major brands on the course. In my second year I did a live men’s tailoring brief with Vivienne Westwood. I also created a capsule collection for Amanda Wakeley. And I spent a year on placement in London with Mother of Pearl.
How did you find the teaching?
The tutors and the technicians in every single year are so helpful. It's not really a tutor-student relationship – I class them as friends. They're so helpful and answer any questions you have. When I was building my concept they helped me think about what avenues to go down. Now, at the end of my course, I feel fully prepared to start my career in fashion.
