'Perseverance was key to landing my dream job.'
Sam Ashoo studied Journalism at Sheffield Hallam. His placement at Sheffield United inspired him to pursue a dream career.
"I wasn’t sure what to study at uni, but as an avid football fan I thought sports writing or broadcasting would be a good option. Sheffield Hallam had the perfect opportunity in their Journalism course.
"I loved the freedom of the course, as well as the placement opportunities. I shadowed Sheffield United's media team, and it inspired me to pursue broadcast journalism as a serious career path.
"After graduation, I was rejected for a couple of full-time positions. I moved home to Lincoln to try freelancing - this was really useful in developing my experience.
"Eventually, I saw a position at Liverpool Football Club. I applied for the job and was successful!
"It's been the most enjoyable years of my life. I started off as an assistant producer, cutting highlights and writing scripts. Now I'm a reporter - I interview first team players and present shows from the studio.
"Freelancing, persevering and building up your experience for CVs, portfolios and showreels is essential. It's really hard to get a full-time position in journalism straight out of uni - so don't ever feel down when you get rejected. Keep pushing yourself and always approach people."
