"Discovering my passion for Biochemistry at Sheffield Hallam University."
Katie Boulton made a career change by studying BSc in Biochemistry. Prior to this, she worked as an art and design technician and volunteered as a community first responder for the South Yorkshire ambulance service.
“What set Sheffield Hallam apart for me was the extensive lab time offered as part of the degree. Unlike other universities, Hallam provided me with hands-on experience right from the start. I understood the importance of practical work in biochemistry, and this program offered just that.
"The variety of modules available was another aspect that appealed to me. It allowed me to explore different facets of biochemistry and gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject. The convenience of commuting from home, made Hallam the perfect choice.
“One of the standout features of the degree was the placement year option. This was an incredible opportunity to gain real-world experience, which I knew would be invaluable for my future career.
“Throughout my time at Hallam, the exceptional support and guidance from the dedicated tutors made all the difference. They not only inspired me but also went the extra mile to provide one-on-one tuition whenever needed. Their continued support was instrumental in my academic journey.
“One of the highlights of the course for me was a mini project titled 'Metabolic Enzyme Activity and Cancer.' It involved measuring lactate dehydrogenase, planning and organising laboratory activities, and testing the 'Warburg Hypothesis in Leukaemia.' The experience of producing a scientific poster to display the results was incredibly rewarding.
“My third year was dedicated to a placement at Technostics, based at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham. I worked as a research assistant on projects for pharmaceutical companies, conducting independent laboratory work. I gained invaluable experience in analysing throat formulations for diagnosing reflux.
“What began as a placement eventually led to a full-time position, where my focus shifted to upper gastrointestinal research. Today, my primary area of research revolves around reflux and the digestive enzyme pepsin. I've been actively involved in diagnosing Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) and have authored or co-authored seven scientific publications within my field.
“My academic achievements at Sheffield Hallam University were recognized through several awards, including the Hallam awards for personal development, the Dawn Hadden Memorial Prize for top-achieving mature students, and The Royal Society of Biology's Accredited Top Project Award.
“Building on this strong foundation, I am now pursuing a full-time PhD in collaboration with RD Biomed and Northumbria University. My research centres around understanding how individuals in the UK manage reflux and associated symptoms, with a specific focus on dietary triggers.
“My journey at Sheffield Hallam University has been nothing short of transformative. The combination of exceptional education, unwavering support, and practical experience has not only prepared me for a fulfilling career in biochemistry but has also fuelled my passion for research. If you're looking for a university that provides a comprehensive biochemistry program with real-world opportunities, Sheffield Hallam University should be at the top of your list.”
