'My placement gave me the experience I need to do well as a quantity surveyor'
Sanket Pravin Adhav is an international student studying MSc Quantity Surveying (Work Experience). As part of his course, he completed a year-long placement as a quantity surveying assistant with a construction firm.
'I chose to study Quantity Surveying at Sheffield Hallam because of its reputable built environment courses, its facilities, and its strong industry connections. Sheffield also has a vibrant construction industry and appealing city environment, making it an ideal place to study this subject.
'Sheffield Hallam prioritises employability and makes sure you have plenty of practical learning experiences.
'I found that everything that I learnt on the course was highly applicable to the work I did on placement.
'During my placement I supported senior quantity surveyors, completing tasks such as cost estimations, quantity take-offs, preparing bills of quantities, and analysing tender documents. I also took part in site visits and meetings to gain practical experience in project monitoring.
'The highlight of my placement was getting to work on a high-profile construction project. I was involved in the pre-construction phase - this allowed me to work with experienced professionals, gain insight into complex construction processes, and contribute to the overall success of the venture.
'The exposure to real-world challenges and the chance to apply my skills in a practical setting has been both rewarding and invaluable for my professional development.
'After I’ve finished my degree, I want to establish myself as a professional quantity surveyor in the industry, eventually becoming a senior quantity surveyor or project manager. My placement has provided me with a solid foundation to achieve this.'
