'The further study discount meant I could intern as a strength and conditioning coach.'
Class of 2020 graduate Lizzy chose to study MSc Strength and Conditioning Coaching after studying a related module on her BSc Sports and Excercise Science undergraduate degree and starting as a junior intern in the Team Hallam Strength and Conditioning suite.
She now has several roles as a strength and conditioning (S&C) coach and wants to continue to work with developing athletes with the dream of eventually leading her own a development programme one day.
'The Class of 2020 further study discount allowed me to focus on my masters and take on more interning opportunities than I would've have if I went to another uni and had to take on a part-time job to cover the cost.'
'In my masters project with Wales Institute of Sport, I worked closely with the S&C coaches at Sport Wales to build an educational resource regarding the menstrual cycle in sport performance that all coaches in the institute could use in their practice.
'The opportunities to apply my learning were endless. We had face-to-face workshops almost weekly and online seminars were always interactive with a lot of group work and scenarios. I really enjoyed the more coaching oriententaed modules such coaching in theory and the opportunity to speak and connect with various successful S&C coaches.
'All lecturers on the masters were very supportive, easily reachable when needed and always happy to support us with our careers by helping with interview prep and making connections - one lecturer even supported me in publishing one of my assignments with UK Coaching.
'I now have various jobs and internships in S&C. I work within the S&C team at Wales Lacrosse as assistant to the U18 women's performance team. I am lead S&C coach for Wickersley Netball Club and I'm a lead intern at Team Hallam S&C suite. I have also secured a role as a graduate athletic development coach at Millfield school.
'I find myself using the skills I learnt on my masters continuously, whether that be simply planning delivery of sessions to my netball players or tracking the workload of my lacrosse players.'
