Flexible study
You can talk to us about any problems with your timetable at the start of term, and discuss problems with your dedicated student support adviser at any time.
You'll also have access to two 24-hour libraries and a range of online learning materials, from lecture notes to digital books and journals.
If something unexpected happens, you could apply for a longer deadline through our Extenuating Circumstances Policy and Procedure (PDF 178Kb) so you don’t miss out.
Our nursery
We have a nursery at our Collegiate Campus. You can go to university with the peace of mind that your children will be looked after in a safe and caring environment. It’s open to children aged between six months and five years.
Extra support for carers
If you look after someone with an illness, disability or special educational needs, we will help you create a carers support plan. This gives you extra flexibility around deadlines, exams and your timetable.
SHU Progress application support
SHU Progress provides support throughout the university application process for students who care for a family member or friend due to illness, disability, mental health condition or addiction. The scheme provides additional support from the year you choose to apply to university through to becoming a university student. Learn more about SHU Progress.
Financial help
Student parents and carers are one of the priority groups for our Student Success Scholarship. It’s extra money to help pay for your living costs, and you don’t need to pay it back.
You may also be able to apply for:
- Maintenance grant – if you have a low household income, you may be able to get this funding. You don’t have to pay it back.
- Hallam Hardship Fund – these one-off payments are there to help you through unexpected financial difficulties while you’re studying.
