Music and nightlife

Big nights with an independent focus

Sheffield has great, independent nightlife. There’s something for everyone here, from big clubs and live shows to quiet pubs and late-night cafes.

Two students sat talking on a sofa in a bustling city bar.

Student nights

Sheffield is a big student city, so there’s somewhere full of students most nights of the week. You’ll find venues big and small, playing everything from current music to older classics to house.

Clubs along Carver Street are always popular with students. They’re the place to go for chart music and student deals most nights of the week. Corporation is an iconic Sheffield club that has student nights and live music. Another much-loved venue is Tank, which has house, techno and bass nights, including one just for students.

Live music

If it’s gigs you’re after, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Mid-sized venues like The Leadmill, O2 Arena and Corporation have both well-known and more alternative bands and DJs in their line-up. Smaller bars along West Street and Division Street also have local bands and DJs playing more eclectic music.

Sheffield’s live music scene really comes into its own during the Tramlines festival. Popular names play at the event held in Hillsborough, but inner-city independent venues also host free or cheap gigs as part of Tramlines Fringe.

Pubs and bars

Bar crawls around West Street, Abbeydale Road, Kelham Island or Division Street are always popular nights out. They’re either right in the city or close to student areas, so easy for you to get to.

Sheffield is also full of places to enjoy a craft beer. There are 23 breweries here making more than 400 ales and beers. Kelham Island has a few pubs to try out and the Sheffield Tap inside the train station is something of a craft ale icon here.

Games and activities

Looking for a more challenging night out? Book some time in bowling alleys, crazy golf courses and karaoke rooms. Try your hand at shuffleboard, augmented-reality darts, table tennis and more.

We've even got a board game cafe, with everything from simple family favourites to complex strategy games.

Food halls and cafes

Sheffield’s three biggest food halls, Cutlery Works, Kommune, and Sheffield Plate have a great atmosphere for a night out.

You'll also find some great cafes and ice-cream parlours that open into the evening – perfect for a relaxed, alcohol-free evening or just a quick sugar hit.
