From cheap eats to vegan feasts, Sheffield has a broad food scene to suit everyone. Whether you need a quick bite between lectures or something special to celebrate a great grade, it will all be on your doorstep. It's no surprise that we've been named the UK's top foodie city outside of London (Accor, 2023).
Between lecture fix
Both campuses are close to great cafes. These are ideal for refuelling in between lectures or squeezing in some prep before seminars.
If you’re at City Campus, the streets opposite the main building are home to some eclectic cafes. At Collegiate, you can call into cafes along Ecclesall Road, affectionally known by students and locals as ‘Eccy Road’.
Street food flavours
Street food has exploded in Sheffield. Our Cutlery Works food hall is the biggest in the north of England, but also check out Kommune, Sheffield Plate and the Foodhall Project. Sheffield's newest food hall, Cambridge Street Collective was named the UK's Best Food Hall in the 2024 British Street Food Awards.
The monthly night market, Peddler, is popular with students too, combining amazing food with DJ sets and live music.
Each one is packed with pop-up independents serving tasty dishes in a big communal space. It means you can all enjoy eating together even if you have different tastes or dietary needs.
The indie food district
Sheffield is growing fast, and out of all the new development has come a food and drink destination called Kelham Island, named the 35th coolest place in the world by Time Out in 2022.
Former warehouses are now home to independent cafes, restaurants and pubs selling craft beer. It’s popular with students and locals throughout the week, but really comes to life at the weekend.
Eat around the world
As a multicultural city, Sheffield has great food from all corners of the globe. Walk down London Road and Abbeydale Road to find places selling delicious curries, stir fries, tacos, sushi, souvlaki, pizza and much more.
Both roads are close to areas popular for student house shares, so they may well become your local spots in your second and third year.
The weekly shop
In Sheffield, you’ll never be far away from a big budget supermarket for cheap essentials. For the best bargains, The Moor Market and legendary Ozmen international supermarket have loads of fresh ingredients for low prices. Making tasty meals at home won't cost you much.
Sheffield Food Festival
During Semester 2, Sheffield hosts a food festival. It’s a great weekend to be in the city. Street food stalls, artisan creators and bars pop up in key city centre streets. There's also live music from some great local bands.
