A lifelong passion for sports and a desire to inspire students drove Lucy’s decision to study a PGCE Secondary Physical Education course at Sheffield Hallam University, and experiences like teaching abroad, leading school trips, and building confidence through placements have prepared her for a rewarding career in education.
"I chose to study PGCE Secondary Physical Education at Sheffield Hallam because I wanted a course that allowed me to connect with other students, lecturers, and academic advisors in a practical way. After researching the course and hearing glowing recommendations from friends and family, I was confident it was the right choice for me. The accessibility of travel to Sheffield Hallam made it even more appealing.
"From a young age, I’ve always loved PE and participated in a range of sports, so sharing this passion with students and providing opportunities they might not have at home has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing the impact I’ve had on students from Year 7 to 11, and witnessing their pride and achievement, makes all the hard work worth it. Inspiring young people to try new sports and engage in physical activity is something I’m excited to continue as a PE teacher.
"Throughout the course, I’ve learned so much by observing expert colleagues on placement and through Friday university sessions, which provide essential knowledge on teaching various sports. My host placement was a highlight; the support, feedback, and opportunities I received were amazing. I even got to teach in the Netherlands for three weeks, take part in sports days, and accompany a school trip to Germany. These experiences helped me build confidence and try new ideas with the support of my colleagues.
"The support at Sheffield Hallam has been outstanding. My course leader and academic advisor were always there to offer guidance, especially as I prepared for job applications. The materials provided were invaluable, and the regular check-ins made me feel cared for throughout the year.
"Looking ahead, I’m eager to establish myself at my new school in September, but my mentor has inspired me to aim even higher. I hope to become a mentor for future trainees, helping them find their way into the profession and supporting their journey, which I know will be deeply rewarding."
