Sheffield Hallam University are proud to co-ordinate the Integrated Clinical and Practitioner Academic Programme Internship Scheme across the North East and Yorkshire region of NHS England.

This scheme is open to registered health and care staff (nursing, midwifery, allied health professions, pharmacists and health care scientists) employed in health care or social care organisations in the North East and Yorkshire regions of NHS England. We are keen to see applications from a wide range of registered professions and work settings, including acute, community and social care. In 2024/25 we are extending the scope of the internship to support clinical research development in the following ways:

  • Applicants wishing to make their first steps into research and develop their understanding of clinical research and ‘clinical academic’ careers (traditional internship applicants)
  • Advanced Practitioners wishing to explore how they might sustainably engage with the research pillar of practice
  • Registered staff engaged in research delivery who wish to further develop their research delivery role or transition to clinical academic roles
  • Applicants wishing to explore opportunities to embed research into clinical practice (e.g. knowledge exchange or knowledge mobilisation)
  • Registered staff with a leadership role who wish to develop research leadership and/or embed and promote a positive research culture within their workplace (may or may not require a research supervisor as noted below)

The scheme provides interns with academically supervised interventions that both engage and expose the intern to the clinical academic research environment and also provide them with the practical skills to undertake a research project supported by an expert clinical academic supervisor.  The key components to the internship programme are:

  • a Clinical Academic Research Experience of 30 days supported (where appropriate) by supervision and research mentorship.
  • an optional Educational Learning Package comprising of 2 attendance days and 4 half days of online teaching.

By the end of the programme we hope that participants will have the confidence to apply their newly learned skills within their employing Trusts, become research champions, embed research into practice, and potentially consider a future clinical academic career to include formally accredited education programmes, either within the NIHR Integrated Clinical Academic Programme, or via other routes. Interns will also benefit from an enhanced ability to apply successfully for further formal research training.

Further details of the Internships scheme are available by clicking the links at the bottom of this page.

  • normally employed by a NHS health or care organisation (or are delivering NHS services) in the North East and Yorkshire geographies
  • a registered health professional in a clinical role (excluding doctors and dentists)
  • do not already hold a research qualification e.g. (MPhil/MRes or PhD). Apre-registration Health MSc programme or a post-registration practice-based Master’s award is exempt from this rule).
