The Humanities Research Centre brings together the work of English, Stage and Screen and History and is based at City Campus. The research centre supports the research funding, strategy and development of the three humanities areas.

History

The History group at Sheffield Hallam University is comprised of 15 historians specialising in modern History. Our research clusters focus on themes in Imperial and Global History, Economic and Business History, Women’s and Gender History, European History (with specialisms in German, French, and Eastern Europe), and Popular Culture and Politics in Britain. We have a strong record of excellent research; 67% of History research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent in REF2014, based on a full entry of all 15 members of the group. You will be joining an expanding, active, and vibrant post-graduate community.

Our research groups are in Renaissance Literature, Writing, Gender and Culture 1700-1900, Modern and Contemporary literature, Creative Writing, Language and Linguistics, and Digital Humanities. We have a strong research record: 52% of our research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent in REF 2014 and we have an active and inclusive research culture involving staff, PhD and MA students.

Stage & Screen

We welcome applications from students wishing to work in the areas of contemporary British theatre and the processes of playwriting; live art and performance in relation to gender, the built environment and site-specific performance practice; film history and criticism; East Asian and transnational cinemas; quality television; or adaptation studies. Applications involving practice-based methodologies are particularly welcome.

As a research student, you take taught modules in research training alongside MA students. It is possible to progress from research Masters degrees to PhD.
