When you arrive at Manchester airport, head to passport control. 

If you’re from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, or the USA and staying for over 6 months, you can use the automated eGates.

If you’re a short-term student (up to 6 months) or from a country not listed above, you must see an officer to get a passport stamp. This stamp gives you the permissions needed for your studies. To assist with this, download and present the request for a passport stamp document to a Border Force Officer. It can be shown either printed or on a mobile device.

Free airport pickup service

We offer a free airport pickup service for international Sheffield Hallam students arriving at Manchester Airport. This service is only available from Thursday 9 January – Sunday 12 January 2025.

If you arrive during these dates, we will collect you from Manchester airport and bring you to Sheffield, helping you with essential tasks you need to complete on arrival. Please make sure to book in advance. The booking link will be published early December 2024. 

Terms and conditions

• Eligibility: This service is available to all Sheffield Hallam international students arriving during the service period.
• Booking: You must pre-book by completing our arrival information form at least three days before your arrival. If you arrive without booking or book too late, we cannot guarantee a seat on the coach. 
• Email address: Make sure to use your personal email address for booking. Check your inbox for a confirmation email from hallamhelp@shu.ac.uk. If you don’t see it, check your spam/junk folder.
• Pickup times: The service operates at 11am, 2pm and 5pm from Thursday 9 January – Sunday 12 January 2025. If you arrive after 5pm, we will not be able to meet you.
• Late flights: If your flight is delayed by more than an hour, we will do our best to accommodate you on the next available pickup of the day or the following morning, subject to availability and space.
• Finding our student ambassadors: you will need to find our student ambassadors as soon as possible after arrival. They will be wearing green t-shirts with the Sheffield Hallam University logo. If you miss the pickup, you will need to make your own way to Sheffield.
• Travelling companions: Any non-student companions (such as parents, guardians, relatives, children over 2 years old, friends, etc) will be charged £20 per person for using this service.

Making your own way to Sheffield

If you arrive outside of the service dates or choose to travel on your own, you can use the train or coach services at the airport. 

• Train: Take the first available train to Manchester Piccadilly and change there for a direct train to Sheffield. Train costs from £12 and takes 1 hour 20 minutes.
• Coach: There are a few limited services by coach to Sheffield operated by National Express. You’ll need to get a through ticket, changing at Leeds (costs from £9.40 and takes 4 hours).
