Healthcare

Accessing healthcare while you study

If you are studying in the UK for six months or more, you will pay a fee that gives you access to the National Health Service (NHS). This means you can see a doctor, go to hospital and have certain treatments without paying each time. The fee is £470 for each year of your visa, and you pay it as part of your visa application.

The UK government immigration healthcare pages tell you more about how much you’ll need to pay and how often.

If you will be studying on a short course for up to six months, you must take out insurance to cover your medical expenses because you will not be eligible for free NHS medical treatment.

Extra healthcare costs

Note that the healthcare fee does not cover medicines, eye tests or dental care. Expect to pay extra for these.

You will also have to pay if you choose to use private healthcare, for example to avoid long waiting times for NHS services.

You’ll also need to pay an extra yearly fee for any dependents travelling with you on the same visa.

Health and wellbeing at Hallam

Our Student Health services help you to easily get the care you need. We have a clinic at City campus, and you can book appointments if you need to see a doctor or nurse.

You can also get support for your mental health and wellbeing through the university. We have resources online to help you look after yourself as well as professional advisers who can support you one-on-one.
