Credibility interviews

The Home Office uses credibility interviews to ensure that genuine students are granted visas to study in the UK.

Not all applicants are selected for an interview, some are chosen randomly or based on specific circumstances related to their immigration or education history. Some students seeking to extend their UK Student visa may also be required to attend a credibility interview.

What happens during a credibility interview?

During the interview, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge about your chosen course and university and your readiness for studying in the UK. You may be asked about your:

  • immigration history
  • education and employment history
  • financial circumstances
  • chosen course and university
  • living arrangements in the UK
  • post-study plans

If you are pursuing a PhD, you might be asked more in-depth questions about your research.

The interview also assesses your English language proficiency to the required standard. Your responses in the interview, along with the information in your visa application, contribute to the Home Office's decision-making process.

Preparation tips

Prepare for your credibility interview by:

  • familiarising yourself with details about your chosen university and course
  • linking your academic and professional background with your career goals and reasons for further study
  • practising answers to potential interview questions about your UK study plans

Interview process

You will usually be interviewed during your biometrics appointment at the visa application centre. While most students require only one interview, some may be asked to attend a second interview, if necessary. The Home Office will contact you to arrange this if needed.

Once your credibility interview is complete, an Entry Clearance Officer will review your visa application. If successful, you will receive your application documents, including your passport with visa vignette and a decision letter.

Failure to attend your scheduled interview without a valid reason may result in your visa application being refused.
