Richard is a first-year apprentice studying our Senior Leader degree apprenticeship and the Managing Director of Maxons Sweets. 20 years since his undergraduate degree he finds it rewarding to learn new skills.

“An apprenticeship isn't something I considered until I attended a talk last year. I already work with Sheffield Hallam in the food engineering department and sit on the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB).

“The support on offer has been really good, I’m dyslexic and I’ve had access to great tools and software. Lecturers are approachable and helpful and have great industry experience.

“At Maxons Sweets, I am the Managing Director and look after the commercial side of the business along with some process changes within the factory. I lead on strategy, sales, marketing and new product development.

“The course modules allow you to apply great ideas to improve or change your own business. I have put new ideas into the business and the modules have given me the confidence to deliver ideas we are already working on.

“The networking opportunities are great. As a small business, speaking to people in different industries and sectors is really helpful. The chance to learn from my peers and lecturers who have an industry background is useful.

“I feel more confident in decision making and thought processes. The apprenticeship is applied and the learning is much easier when you understand the reasoning behind it.

“The strategy and innovation module has been my favourite project, I have tied this into the 5 year plan for Maxons Sweets. This has led to a slightly new direction backed up by modelling and information gathered.

“There is little to lose, the learnings give you extra options through your chosen career path. It can be hard work, but hard work is worthwhile.”
