“The apprenticeship has opened doors for me and enhanced my career prospects.”

Louis Crutchley

Louis Crutchley studied BA (Hons) Professional Practice in Management at Sheffield Hallam University and is currently working as technical sales executive at WDA Machine Knives.

“I chose this course to enhance my knowledge and skills and improve my short- and long-term career prospects.

“One of the most enjoyable aspects of my higher and degree apprenticeship experience has been the people I've met on the course. The environment is so supportive and I’ve made some lifelong friendships. Plus, the assignments were directly linked to my organisation, which meant I could gain new theoretical knowledge while also applying it in real-world settings to make a meaningful impact.

“The module tutors and course leaders were always available to offer help whenever I needed it, whether it was with individual assignments or general course progression.

“The course has provided me with lots of opportunities to apply my learning in practical settings. I've had the privilege of overseeing projects and have focused on personal development and workplace interactions. The emphasis on critical thinking and research has also helped me develop my decision-making skills.

“In my current role, my main responsibilities include managing both domestic and international accounts. Identifying opportunities to develop existing and new business has been a really important part of my role. Throughout the degree, I've had the chance to lead and be involved in projects to develop new product ranges, which has led to increased sales and market share – which I feel really proud about.

“As a degree apprentice, most days are focused on managing both work priorities and university studies and finding a good balance is a key part of each day. The support of the company and utilising the off-the-job time helps a lot with this and has allowed me to spend time working on university assignments while also being in the workplace. The time at university in the study blocks is also hugely beneficial.

“My favourite project to date is probably the work-based project at the end of year two. This project involved conducting primary and secondary research about a pressing issue in my company. The findings and subsequent actions taken as a result made a huge impact across multiple departments in the business. It also paved the way for the final work-based investigation in year three.

“If you’re considering a higher and degree apprenticeship, my advice is simple—go for it! As someone who has completed the degree apprenticeship, I can confidently say that time flies by. Three years may seem like a significant commitment, but it really isn't. The degree has already opened so many doors for me and enhanced my career prospects. Approach each assignment with a positive mindset, and you’ll feel a massive sense of achievement when you complete the course.

“I’ve got lots of ambitions for my future career. My main goal is to work in the United States and establish a successful career there. It’s always been a dream of mine, and with my degree, I’m now one step closer.

“Finally, I’d like to emphasise that you don’t need to worry about what stage of life or role you’re in. Our group consisted of a diverse range of people from many different walks of life who all supported each other and achieved great things together.”
