Lois Gault

Lois Gault is studying our unique Packaging Professional apprenticeship and working at Hothouse Beauty as a packaging technologist. Hothouse Beauty make personal care and cosmetic products including Kids Stuff Crazy Foam and St Moriz, the biggest tanning brand in the UK.

Why did you choose to study this apprenticeship?

“I wanted to do a degree apprenticeship rather than a traditional undergraduate degree so I could jump straight into working and build my work experience alongside my knowledge.

“I have always loved studying product design and technology so I was excited to have the chance to work in the industry and see products come to life, from the concept stage right through to final production.”

What work are you doing in the business?

“I’m the only packaging professional in the business so I work across numerous teams to ensure that quality and functionality is achieved for all areas that involve packaging. This includes testing new products, managing artwork and resolving any packaging issues that arise.”

How has your apprenticeship improved your skills?

“Before this apprenticeship I had no prior experience in the industry, so almost everything I know now I have learnt since I started.

“I have increased my confidence to liaise with suppliers and customers. My understanding of material science has increased, which means I can assess the suitability of packaging based on the product’s formulation. And I’ve improved my technological skills on Excel and Adobe Illustrator.”

How has it affected your career ambitions?

“My uni assignments have allowed me to be curious and challenge my understanding of packaging. It has provided me with opportunities to undertake and lead work-based projects that I am passionate about.

“The course has also provided me with a network of peers across a wide variety of sectors within the packaging industry. Combined with what I’ve learned on the course, it has given me a holistic insight into the world of packaging, which I can bring back into my workplace and pass on to my colleagues.”

How have you contributed to the success of your organisation?

“I have designed and implemented new in-house compatibility testing procedures for the business. The improvements to this service mean that we provide our customers with extra support and quality guarantees, benefitting our overall reputation.”

What are your plans for the future?

“I would love to see the packaging team within the business expand as the organisation continues to grow. Eventually I would like to be able to bring in another packaging apprentice and manage my own team, creating the resource to further improve our packaging procedures and achieve our sustainability goals.”
