Alexander is currently a Technical Project Manager at international recruitment company FDM Group. He is currently studying on our MSc Digital and Technology Solutions Specialist (Data Analytics) higher and degree apprenticeship programme.

“Studying on the digital and technology solutions specialist degree apprenticeship at Sheffield Hallam, focusing on data analytics has given me a keen interest in all aspects of data analytics that contribute to converting data into real-world information of value in the workplace.

“I entered the course with little experience in statistical models or machine learning, in fact, having recently left the Royal Marines Band Service, I didn’t have any experience in higher education. My experience makes me believe others can also learn technical subjects if they are committed.

“Working as a Technical Project Manager, I have played a key role in industrialising my organisation's approach to digital reporting. Most recently, I have been working on improving the core business processes and data across the front-end systems, and creating machine learning models to surface client contact personas, which business-to-business marketing campaigns can target. 

“The knowledge gained from the apprenticeship has helped me understand data structures and new analytical techniques. Doing this has allowed me to create hypotheses to surface hidden trends within our existing data pools."

“I have developed an understanding of the tools and techniques used for data analysis and machine learning, along with other areas such as data design, quality and architecture. I now have ambitions to become more data-oriented within my role, with the aim of helping improve data practices within the business.

“My specialist knowledge has helped peers involved in data-driven projects. Since increasing my skills, I have started to work across departments to advise on data design, governance and analytics.

“I have encouraged others to join degree courses, for data analytics and supported others undertaking apprenticeship courses between FDM and Sheffield Hallam.

“FDM's Information Technology department has a proactive approach to upskilling its workforce and making higher education available. And I am grateful to our Chief Information Officer who recognised the work I had been undertaking and suggested that I may enjoy undertaking a Masters  in a related subject.”
