Course summary

  • Develop practical application of site management, planning, costing, health and safety and building applications
  • Apply your learning across your working environment, on site visits and in practical projects
  • Use the skills and knowledge you gain to help attain the Site Safety Plus – Site Managers’ Safety Training Scheme and Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme

This course is suitable if you have completed a previous qualification in construction and you're looking to develop your knowledge of the industry and gain a degree qualification. 

This course meets the construction site management degree apprenticeship standard.

How you learn

As well as academic theory, work-based learning and practical application in the workplace, you will develop effective skills in teamwork, negotiation and problem solving. 

You'll have an academic advisor and work based learning coach to support you. The course also explores the changing nature of the construction industry.

You will learn through: 

  • part-time study at Sheffield Hallam
  • lectures and class-based seminars
  • site visits and workshops
  • work-based learning
  • practical application
  • a final year work-based investigation

You will progress through the course following successful achievement of assessments, which address the learning outcomes for each module and allow you to complete the course.

Campus facilities

You'll learn in modern facilities in our Natural and Built Environment Department based at our City Campus.

Entry requirements

Throughout the course, apprentices spend at least 20% of their working hours at university. They can be existing employees looking to develop their careers, or new applicants to the business.

Applicants must:

  • be over 18
  • not be in full time education
  • have the right to abode in the UK
  • meet the course entry requirements

GCSE (or equivalent)

Maths and English at level 2 or above (grade 4, or previously C)

If you don't have this yet, you'll need to achieve this level before you take your end-point assessment.

Additional qualifications

Successful completion of one the following Level 4 Apprenticeship Standards from an academic institution or registered training provider:

If you have not completed one of these apprenticeships, you must have an equivalent certificate of higher education (CertHE), higher national certificate (HNC)or higher national diploma (HND), or an equivalent qualification in a construction-related subject. 

You would normally have a minimum of an all Merit average (not including key or common skills).

If English is not your first language, you will also need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent.

Applicants with alternative qualifications or a combination of qualifications and work experience will also be considered.

Year two

  • Work based project for built environment apprentices 
  • Building Information Modelling for Apprenticeships
  • Strategic Facilities Management for Built Environment Apprentices

Year three

  • Work based investigation for built environment apprentices 
  • Advanced construction planning for construction site management apprentices
  • Reflective practice for apprenticeship end-point assessment preparation 

Year four

  • End-point assessment
