Additional Course Costs Guide

Besides tuition fees, you might encounter additional expenses. These costs are general and can vary based on your course and personal choices.

Course specific costs

Course-specific additional costs are detailed separately on your course page. Check our online prospectus for more details.

General additional costs

There are common additional costs that apply to all courses and study modes. These include:

Laptop, PC, or other device

While PCs are available for use within the University, we encourage you to own or have guaranteed daily access to a PC, laptop, or a device compatible with Office 365 (software provided free of charge). Costs could range from £0 to £1,000 throughout your course.

Stationery and learning resources

You may need books for annotation, stationery, printing, and photocopying. Our library provides resources in print and electronically, but you can buy your own copies if you prefer.

These resources may cost between £0 and £205 throughout your course. Most assessments are submitted online.

Travel costs

As part of your studies, you may undertake consultancy projects that involve travel for research, interviews, employment fairs, and company visits. Costs vary based on location and transport choices.

Placement costs

The University offers work experience opportunities, which might involve travel expenses depending on the location of your placement. You can choose your own placement, so travel and accommodation costs will vary.

Students usually manage their finances through careful budgeting, although this may depend on factors like placement pay rates and living expenses in the area.

Travel to study or work abroad

You might have the opportunity to take part in an international study exchange or work placement. These experiences will involve additional costs that vary depending on the destination, such as visa, travel, accommodation, subsistence and other administrative costs.

Financial assistance for study or working abroad may be available through the UK Government's Turing Scheme, but this support is not guaranteed and may not cover all costs.

Graduation

For your graduation ceremony, you'll need to arrange gown hire and optional photography through an external provider. You also need tickets for any guests attending the ceremony; however, your own ticket is free.

The costs in 2023 ranged between £40 and £165, covering:

  • Gown hire: £40-£60, depending on your level of award
  • Tickets: £10 per guest
  • Photography costs, which vary based on the package chosen
Accommodation

Accommodation and living costs aren't part of additional costs. Check our accommodation website for more information.

Distance learning courses

If you're enrolled in a distance learning course at Sheffield Hallam University, you'll need broadband access for your studies. This will cost from £22 to £46 per month depending on the chosen package, and is necessary for the duration of your course.

International students

If you're planning to study as an international student, there are specific additional costs you need to consider before starting your course, including:

Visa costs

You'll need to cover your visa costs and meet any financial conditions. This also includes any direct or indirect costs associated with applications for third country visas if needed for international learning experiences within your course, like international field trips.

Visit the government website for the latest costs and conditions.

Health-related costs

If you are coming to the UK as a full-time higher education student and you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which has been issued in an EU country after 1 January 2021, you may be able to apply for a refund of your Immigration Health Surcharge fee.

Some countries require a tuberculosis (TB) test if you're studying in the UK for more than six months. Visit the government website for the list of countries.

If you're travelling to the UK to study for six months or less, you must purchase travel insurance beforehand to cover any medical treatment costs while you're here.
