Rent Guarantor Scheme
To be able to pay for rent in agreed instalments, most landlords require a suitable third person to act as a rent guarantor.
A rent guarantor is a third party, a family member for example, who agrees to pay your rent if you cannot. We understand that this is not always possible, especially for students who do not have family support.
If you have accepted a room in university allocated halls, can’t find a guarantor and can’t afford to pay your rent upfront, a guarantor insurance scheme is available to eligible students who are care experienced or estranged from family.
For more information about the scheme, please email residentialsupport@shu.ac.uk.
If you are looking at private sector accommodation and are having issues finding a guarantor, other options may be available. For advice, please contact us and/or the Students Union Advice Centre.
Please take care not to enter into a legally binding tenancy agreement if you have not secured a suitable guarantor, as without one your rent may be expected in full before you are able to move into the property.
Unite Foundation Scholarship Scheme
Sheffield Hallam University is proud to be working with the Unite Foundation. The Unite Foundation Scholarship provides a free student bedroom in a purpose built Unite Students building for up to three years of undergraduate study. It is open to students aged 25 or under who are estranged from family or care leavers.
Visit the Unite Foundation website for details on eligibility and how to apply. Please note that applications for September 2024 are now closed.
Applying for accommodation
If you intend to apply for the Unite Foundation Scholarship, you should select Unite accommodation (Westhill Hall) when you apply for halls through the University Accommodation Service. Please ensure to write ‘Applying to the Unite Scholarship’ in the additional notes field on your accommodation application. This is to ensure that, if your Unite Foundation Scholarship application is successful, you can take up the free accommodation offer.
Please note that if you apply for and sign a contract with an alternative accommodation provider, you will be liable to meet the terms of that contract.
If you have already applied for university allocated halls and are now applying for the Unite Foundation Scholarship, we recommend that you contact us so that we can update your accommodation application on your behalf.
