Private sector accommodation

When to start looking

Signing up early? - Think again!  If you don't want to live in halls, there is a surplus of good quality student accommodation in Sheffield. Don't believe the myth that there is a shortage of student housing in Sheffield - it's not true! Students who don't start house hunting until the summer before they return to University still secure good properties.

Landlords usually start advertising student properties from December, ready for the following September. Make sure you visit a variety of properties to get a feel for the different types available.

We recommend you wait until after the Christmas break before signing a tenancy agreement for your next academic year.

Where to start looking

There are many ways to find student accommodation. You could make enquiries at local lettings agents or search online. We recommend that you use Studentpad to search for houses, flats and rooms.

Accommodation Service manages and maintains Studentpad to list available properties in and around Sheffield.

You can search Studentpad by

  • type of accommodation
  • contract type
  • living arrangements
  • number of bedrooms
  • location
  • price of rent
  • date property is available

You can also meet potential housemates through the Studentpad message board

In partnership with Sheffield City Council, we have compiled an accredited directory of private student accommodation in Sheffield. The scheme is called Snug.
Snug is a scheme of registering, inspecting and advertising student properties in Sheffield and is intended to make sure all our students have access to good-quality, safe accommodation in the private sector.

All the private sector properties offered on our Sheffield Hallam Studentpad website have been accredited by snug. That means you can be confident they've been inspected by Sheffield City Council and comply with strict rules.
