Students On A Student Visa

Students on a Student Visa who have a mandatory work placement as part of their course can work full-time hours for an employer for the duration of the agreed placement period (please check directly with the student and University for specific course placement requirements). The placement MUST be formally approved by the Work Experience team at the University for this to be applicable. Students are required to be contracted to a minimum of 21+ hours per week and work in person from the company premises at least once a week for the duration of the placement.

There is nothing extra you need to do when recruiting a student, Sheffield Hallam University is still the Student Visa sponsor whilst the student is on a University approved placement as part of their course. As part of our Sponsor licence requirements, Sheffield Hallam University must report details of the student’s placement to UKVI, including the date they begin the placement, confirming when the placement has ended and their return to normal study. If the placement employer and/or place of employment should change during the period of placement, or if the placement ends earlier than expected, this must be reported promptly to UKVI via the University.

The University must also monitor the student’s engagement during their placement. To do so, the University will contact the student's placement employer via email or phone each month to confirm that the student is still working and engaging with their placement fully. It is important that you respond to this as promptly as possible – your cooperation in this regard is greatly appreciated.
