Clubs, sports and activities

At Sport Hallam, we have something for everyone. From competitive or performance sport to give it a go’s and social sport sessions there are sports clubs to suit all interests and abilities. Whether your motivation is to make friends, keep fit, try something new or continue to develop your sporting skills, there is a lot for you to get involved with while studying at Sheffield Hallam University.

British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS): This is the national governing body for higher education sport in the UK. Our clubs compete in BUCS competitions and leagues throughout the year.

Varsity: Our clubs take part in the annual Varsity sporting competition between Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield. This is one of the most anticipated dates in the student calendar and is said to be one of the largest varsity tournaments in the UK.

American football (mixed)

American Football (Mixed) is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome complete rookies to experienced players – there will be a place in our club for everyone.
The team competes in BUCS Leagues against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. We have equipment available for beginners to borrow throughout the season. We train weekly at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park.

Athletics

Athletics is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome students who wish to join to keep fit and have fun as well as members who are performance athletes and wish to compete in a variety of events throughout the season. The team competes in both BUCS Events and local events – one of the main fixtures in the calendar being Steel Cup. We train and compete in multiple disciplines including sprinting, middle distance, long distance and cross-country events. Training takes place at Sheffield’s state of the art sporting facilities at English Institute of Sport as well as the Sheffield Hallam University City Athletics Stadium.

Badminton

Badminton is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome beginners who are looking to play socially and non-competitively as well as experienced members looking to develop their skills and compete in one of our BUCS teams.
We compete in BUCS Nationals as well as the BUCS League providing an opportunity to compete against other University teams across the region. There are lots of opportunities to participate in Badminton training or social sessions across the following venues: City Campus Sport Hall, Collegiate Campus Sports Hall and English Institute of Sport.

Basketball (Men's)

Basketball Men is a club which is open to students of all abilities and backgrounds. We welcome anyone who is wanting to try basketball for the first time, right the way through to experienced players looking to compete.
We have the opportunity for players to compete in BUCS Leagues and local leagues depending on the players' experience and abilities – there will be a place in our club for everyone. We train weekly at English Institute of Sport and Collegiate Campus Sports Hall.

Basketball (Women's)

Basketball Women is a club which is open to students of all abilities and backgrounds. We welcome anyone who is wanting to try basketball for the first time, right the way through to experienced players looking to compete.
We have the opportunity for players to compete in BUCS Leagues and local leagues depending on players experience and abilities – there will be a place in our club for everyone.
The club is coached by experienced professionals who have had success with Sheffield Hatters as well as the Team GB Women’s team. We train weekly at English Institute of Sport and Collegiate Campus Sports Hall.

Boxing

Boxing is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome complete rookies to experienced fighters and champions – there will be a place in our club for everyone.
The team competes in an annual BUCS Event against other University teams across the United Kingdom. We train weekly at Collegiate Campus Sports Hall as well as opportunities with external gyms within the city.

Canoe

Canoe is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome students who are wanting to try something new as well as those from an experienced background.
The clubs compete in BUCS Events across three unique disciplines including Canoe Polo, Slalom and White Water. As part of being a member of the club you will be open to the opportunity to develop your skills by completing qualifications such as river leading, white water safety, first aid and coaching. We have equipment and kit available for beginners to borrow from the club. We train indoors in warm water at Hillsborough Leisure Centre.

Climbing 

Climbing is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome complete beginners to competition climbers – there will be a place in our club for everyone.
Members will have the opportunity to participate in the annual BUCS Nationals Event as well as Northern University Bouldering Series (NUBS) which is open to all abilities. We train frequently at two fantastic venues between The Depot and The Foundry.

Cricket (Men's)

Cricket Men is a club which is open to students of all abilities and backgrounds. We welcome beginners to the sport as well as experienced players – there will be a place in our club for everyone.
The team competes in BUCS Leagues throughout the year. There will be an opportunity to join the indoor team throughout the winter month and outdoors throughout the summer months. We also have opportunities to compete in local indoor six-a-side leagues throughout the academic year. We train weekly at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park.

Cycling

Cycling is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome novice riders as well as experienced members.
The team meets regularly and takes part in official club rides across multiple disciplines including mountain biking, hill climb, road racing and downhill – all of which have the opportunity to compete in BUCS Events throughout the academic year. We welcome riders who participate in any other events outside of this.

Dodgeball

Dodgeball is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome beginners and experienced players – there will be a place in our club for everyone.
The team competes in BUCS Leagues against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. We train weekly at City Campus Sport Hall.

Equestrian

Equestrian is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome complete beginners to advanced riders – there will be a place in our club for everyone. For members looking to join the club non-competitively we offer lessons, hacks and other disciplines to experience socially.
Advanced riders or those wishing to compete are welcomed to take part in BUCS Competitions throughout the academic year. We participate in competitions across both Event Dressage and Show Jumping. We train regularly at Poplar Farm Riding School.

Football (men's)

Football Men is a club which is open to students of all abilities and backgrounds. We welcome players of varied experience levels to join the club. The team competes in BUCS Leagues against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. The team is led by an experienced coach who works for a League Two Club and recently led our club to be BUCS Conference Cup Champions.
The University offers wider playing opportunities across the Social Sport Leagues (6-a-side & 11-a-side) as well as social sport playing opportunities. We train weekly at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park.

Football (women's)

Football Women is a club which is open to students of all abilities and backgrounds. We welcome players of varied experience levels to join the club. The team competes in BUCS Leagues against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. The team is led by experienced coaches who work closely between The FA and Sheffield Hallam University. The University offers wider playing opportunities across the social sport programme.
Sheffield Hallam University is a 3-star accredited University for Women’s Football and Futsal opportunities. The University also boasts an FA Women’s Football Leadership and Development programme to help enhance leadership and development opportunities within the game such as coaching, refereeing and professional development. We train weekly at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park.

Futsal

Futsal is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome beginners to the game looking to try something new as well as experienced players.
The team competes in BUCS Leagues against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. We train weekly at English Institute of Sport and Collegiate Campus Sports Hall.

Golf

Golf is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome beginners and experienced players.
The team competes in BUCS Leagues against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. Our home fixtures are based at Hillsborough Golf Cub.

Hockey (men's)

Hockey Men is a club which is open to students of all abilities and backgrounds. We welcome complete beginners to experienced players.
The team competes in BUCS Leagues against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. We train and compete weekly at Sheffield’s state of the art hockey facility at Abbeydale Sports Club on a water-based pitch that was used during the London 2012 Olympics.

Hockey Women is a club which is open to students of all abilities and backgrounds. We welcome complete beginners to experienced players.
The team competes in BUCS Leagues against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. We train and compete weekly at

Sheffield’s state of the art hockey facility at Abbeydale Sports Club on a water-based pitch that was used during the London 2012 Olympics.

Ice Hockey

Ice Hockey is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome beginners and experienced players.
The Ice Hockey Club known as Sheffield Bears is a unique club in that it is formed in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University & The University of Sheffield students. Sheffield Bears competes in The British University Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA) Leagues. There are various teams within Sheffield Bears ensuring that regardless of your playing ability level there will be opportunities for you to join. We train regularly at Ice Sheffield and the training is tailored to suit all ability levels. We have some equipment available for beginners to borrow throughout the season

Korfball

Korfball is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome beginners to experienced players.
The team competes in BUCS Competitions and Tournaments against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. We also offer playing opportunities in the Yorkshire Korfball League. We train weekly at English Institute of Sport and Collegiate Campus Sports Hall.

Lifting Club 

Lifting Club is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome people who may have never stepped foot in a gym environment before to experienced weightlifters.
Members of the club are invited to local meets whilst experienced members have the opportunity to compete in BUCS Events throughout the year against other University teams across the region. We train weekly at Collegiate Campus Strength & Conditioning Gym.

Netball

The team competes in BUCS Leagues against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. We also provide playing opportunities within the South Yorkshire Netball League. We train weekly at English Institute of Sport and Collegiate Campus Sports Hall.

Sailing & Windsurfing

Sailing & Windsurfing is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome complete beginners to experienced sailors – there will be a place in our club for everyone whether you have stepped onto a boat many times before or not at all.
The club has the opportunity to compete in BUCS Competition against other University teams across the region. For beginners we have regular sessions available to attend which are tailored to the suitable sailing ability level. We train often at Winscar Reservoir.

Snowsports

Snowsports is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome complete beginners to experienced snowboarders and skiers – there will be a place in our club for everyone.
The club has the opportunity to complete in BUCS Events against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. Members are also invited to numerous trips within the UK and abroad in conjunction with student Snowsport travel organization company. We meet regularly under supervision from ski-leaders who can provide a safe and supportive environment for all levels of ability. Dates of meets and trips will be shared within the club.

Swimming

Swimming is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome recreational swimmers to performance and experienced athletes – there will be a place in our club for everyone.
The team competes in BUCS Nationals Competitions against other University teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. We also offer opportunities to compete within British University Swimming League (BUSL). For recreation swimmers there are weekly sessions available to become part of the club. We train weekly at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.

Trampolining

Trampolining is a club which is open to students of all abilities, backgrounds and genders. We welcome complete beginners to experienced players – there will be a place in our club for everyone.
The team competes in BUCS Championships against other University teams across the region. We also offer opportunities to compete in inter-University competitions and Northern English University Trampoline (NEUT) League across three categories; individual, synchronized and DMT. We train weekly at Collegiate Campus Sports Hall.
