External facilities

In addition to the facilities offered by the University, a wide range of external venues are used to service a variety of sports for training, matches or recreational use.

Abbeydale Park Sports Club

A multi-use sports club used for hockey training and matches. It is home to the famous 'Smurf Turf' Olympic hockey pitch from London 2012. Other facilities include a pavillion and car parking spaces.

How to get there

Car - The club is about five miles from the city centre on Abbeydale Road (A621 signposted to Bakewell). Bus - Take bus number 97 or 97A from the city centre to Abbeydale Road or take the number 50 bus from Clarkehouse Road to Dore Village - the club is then half a mile walk away.

The Edge

This is an indoor climbing centre close to the city centre. It is used by the University Climbing club and offers reduced student rates at other times.

How to get there

Car - It is near to Sheffield United FC, at CCC on Bramall Lane, and within walking distance from the city centre.

English Institute of Sport

The new EIS multi-sport site at Sheffield provides sport specific training facilities for athletics, netball, badminton, judo, boxing and basketball, as well as providing sports medical services, strength and conditioning, athlete career education and other services for the region's top athletes. Located between Sheffield Arena and IceSheffield on Coleridge Road in Attercliffe, the EIS is a £20m state of the art sports facility covering almost six acres.

The facility will be used by the University for a number of the above sports.

How to get there

Bus/tram - Supertram stop at Sheffield Arena or the number 69 bus from the city centre or Meadowhall.

Hallamshire Tennis and Squash Club

First class tennis and squash centre with superb indoor and outdoor facilities. This private club is used for University tennis and squash training and matches. There is limited parking.

How to get there

Car - Located on Ecclesall Road (A625), about 15 minutes' walk from Collegiate Campus. Bus - Take bus number 81, 82, 83 or 83a from Pinstone Street to Ecclesall Road.

Hillsborough Golf Club

Founded in 1920, Hillsborough Golf Club is widely regarded as one of the top courses in Sheffield and renowned for having the toughest opening three holes in the country.

How to get there

Car - About 10 miles from the city centre. From the M1 exit at Junction 30, head towards Worksop on the A619. Pass Van Dyke's Hotel on the right, take the second turning on the left down Bondhay Lane and the club house is one mile on the right-hand side.
