Effect of step strategy on the clearance of the first hurdle
Lee Rowley is a part-time PhD student within the Centre for Sports Engineering Research where he aims to investigate and evaluate the biomechanical performance parameters related to first hurdle step strategy in the 110 m sprint hurdles.
For his PhD, Lee’s particular area of research involves the start and approach to the first hurdle and the potential validity of a seven step approach in favour of a conventional eight step approach. The seven step approach has become more common in recent years and has been adopted by many of the world’s leading sprint hurdlers, including World Record holders and Olympic champions.
Despite a seven step approach having a significant impact at the highest level of event, the current degree of investigation is limited. It is envisaged that Lee’s research will contribute to the understanding of the approach to the first hurdle and enable coaches to make informed decisions when looking to develop hurdlers in this critical phase.
Prior to joining Sheffield Hallam Lee graduated from Leeds Beckett University with an MSc in Sports Coaching following a PgDip in Coaching from Loughborough University and a BSc (Hons) in Science in Health, Exercise and Sport from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.
His primary interest lies in the sport of athletics where he has a wealth of experience of competing, team managing and coaching. He is also a keen American Football fan and has previously played for teams in Nottingham and Leeds.
