Software and Hardware Integration for Industry

In many areas of industry, more and more pieces of equipment are being connected and controlled by PC’s and wireless laptops. In some cases, it is desirable to “retro-fit” older equipment doing without the need to purchase new one. Also, ubiquitous networking and internet connectivity makes it possible to monitor and control equipment remotely from the office or even the home.

In one successful project we carried out with a company in Leeds, we produced a feasibility study and built a prototype of a new software package for the monitoring and control of a smart electricity meter. A web-based application was developed that allowed a user to control the meter and access the data remotely from any internet-enabled device (eg laptop, smartphone, tablet, etc.). Several new features were added to the software, including the facility to connect several meters to one single controlling device, thus minimising hardware costs.
