Machine vision

Machine vision

Machine Vision is the application of computer vision to industry and manufacturing. Whilst computer vision is mainly concerned with the application of image processing algorithms on a single computer or a computer network, machine vision involves systems comprising additional components such as image acquisition systems (analogue and digital), input/output cards and actuators (eg robot arms). Machine vision is an engineering area that encompasses computer science, optics, mechanical engineering and industrial automation.

Applications where Machine Vision can be used

Machine vision applications in industry are numerous, here are just a few examples

  • Part inspection and quality control
  • Robot positioning and alignment
  • Optical character recognition
  • Object identification
  • Automatic measurement
  • Face recognition
  • 3D modelling
  • Medical image analysis
  • 2D code reading
  • Remote sensing
  • Surveillance and monitoring
  • Multimedia graphics and automation
  • Food processing and packaging
