Summary

The use of additive manufacturing and 3D printing, which has been in development over the last 30 years, is steadily becoming the norm for many companies in order to produce complete and complex product prototypes, as well as undertake small batch production.

This project focuses on the application of additive manufacturing and 3D printing to produce credible parts, in order to replace or compliment traditional manufacturing processes for industries such as aerospace and rail.  The project includes using a range of digital technologies, such as laser scanning, digital prototyping (CAD) and simulation to develop designs suitable for additive manufacturing and 3D printing.  The project will also seek to further design heuristics to support industry and process specific product developments.
