Summary
Solid particle erosion-corrosion of surfaces is highly destructive in nature and leads to deleterious effects in major industrial sectors such as oil and gas, power generation, marine, automobile, aero-space industry and many more. PVD coatings have a huge potential to replace traditional methods such as electroplating and surface hardening treatments used for erosion-corrosion or tribo-corrosion resistance.
This project deals with studying a range of Chromium and Niobium based PVD coatings for its behaviour against the combined phenomenon of solid particle erosion in corrosive atmosphere. The project includes constructing and establishing an impinging jet erosion-corrosion apparatus. Various advanced analytical techniques will be used to investigate the relation between microstructure, mechanisms acting and erosion-corrosion performance of these coatings.
