Laser clad carbide/metal composite coating
Instrument: Philips XL-40 SEM-EDX
Techniques: BSE imaging, EDX spectroscopy, and EDX element mapping
Summary: The composite coating comprises chromium carbide particles and a NiCr alloy binder. With micro-hardness of HV 1122, it was deposited on M42 high speed steel cutting blades by using laser cladding technique, to improve the wear resistance. Its microstructure is shown in the scanning back-scattered electron image. EDX spectroscopy shows chemical compositions of the carbide and the binder. The EDX mapping shows 2-D distribution of Cr and Ni in the microstructure.
