Weekly Seminar: Lime-Based Materials in Construction, by Dr Richard Ball

Date: Tuesday 25 October 2016
Venue: Owen 920

Topic: Lime-Based Materials in Construction
Presenter: Dr Richard Ball

Lime has been used for many thousands of years by the construction industry. This talk will describe the different types of lime available and some of the important properties which make it more appropriate than cement for many applications, especially conservation of historic structures. The application of materials characterisation techniques to gain a better understanding of the physical and chemical properties will be described with the practical considerations for use explained. Recent research into the interaction of lime with environmental pollutants and the mechanism of carbonation will also be discussed.
