Changing the way we make and use clothes

‘Shaping Sustainable Fashion’ explores theory, practice and methodology for fashion sustainability and specifically examines the way in which contemporary fashion clothing is produced, used and discarded. As fashion and textile designers become aware of the environmental impacts associated with clothing, this book presents a range of approaches that can be used to reduce and avoid textile waste. Examined from a life cycle perspective, the book introduces the fashion and textile design professional, student or enthusiast to discourse that directly translates to design practice.

Edited by Alison Gwilt and Timo Rissanen (Parsons The New School) the book develops ideas from the Fashioning Now project funded by the Australian New South Wales government’s Environmental Trust. Frequently listed as a recommended text, the book is listed on environmental/sustainable design discussion boards, university design course reading lists, specialist blog sites, professional forums and groups. It has received press and web coverage in a number of countries including the USA, Denmark, Australia, UK, and Argentina. Book reviews have been published in The Ecologist, The Higher Education Academy, Design Journal, Design and Culture, and the European Textile magazine. Originally available as a hardback and paperback, the book is now also available as an eBook.
