Sheffield Hallam University provides a centre of expertise in the field of Politeness Theory which is internationally known
Politeness theory is a theory of social and linguistic behaviour which has stimulated a substantial amount of international research in recent years. Sheffield Hallam University hosts the Linguistic Politeness Research Group (LPRG) meetings. These meetings are coordinated by Prof. Sara Mills (Humanities Department) and they attract experts in politeness studies from all over England. At the meetings, members discuss research issues, plan and organise conferences, as well as planning and organising publications.
The LPRG established the Journal of Linguistic Politeness in 2005 and it has published two issues every year ever since. This journal is a high impact, double blind peer reviewed social science journal. It is edited by Karen Grainger (Humanities Department) and Derek Bousfield (University of Central Lancashire).
