The implications of sexualisation for the study of sex, the media culture. The project examines official and popular discourses around sexualisation in the UK, US and Australia.
Beyond Concern aims to uncover the ways in which young people and adults are conceptualised in policy debates, the press and academic and popular literature and to untangle the various concerns around appearance, ageing, commodification and agency that have become drawn into these debates.
It seeks to move beyond current responses to sexualisation to consider their implications for the academic study of sex, sexuality, the media and culture and for understandings of age and maturity, sex and body image, intimacy, commerce and labour.
