Speakers: Jackie Leaver (SHU) / Rebecca Partridge (SHU) / Dan Wolstenholme (Lab4Living)

Jackie is a design researcher within the ADRC and an associate lecturer across a range of design disciplines at SHU. Since graduating with distinction from an AHRC funded MA in Industrial Design, she has worked on a range of research projects, including using visual metaphor and animation to enable young people in care, older people with dementia and non-professional carers of people with dementia to share their stories. She has also had a great deal of involvement in developing exhibitions and other forms of visual communication.

Rebecca joined the Research Centre in July 2012 after graduating with a 1st from the Mdes Product Design course at Sheffield Hallam University. Since joining the Art and Design Research Centre, she has been a researcher for the CLAHRC-SY funded User-Centered Healthcare design project, worked full time on the Health Foundation's SHINE design and rehabilitation programme, and now works in Lab4living, and on a Health Foundation funded Frailsafe project.

Dan undertook a first degree in Neuroscience before training as a nurse and working at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield for six years. During this time Dan completed an MMedSci in nursing and healthcare studies and lectured on pre- and post-registration nursing courses within the School of Nursing at the University of Sheffield. Following this Dan worked in Research management and governance in Chesterfield and Sheffield hospitals before taking up his role as project manager and clinical researcher on the User-centred Healthcare Design project. Dan is the co-facilitator of the Yorkshire and Humber Royal College of Nursing Research Society and reviews for several nursing Journals and Conferences.

Title: SHINE  - Improving self-efficacy in spinal cord injury patients through ‘design thinking’ rehabilitation workshops

Advances in surgical and medical management have significantly reduced the length of time patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) have to stay in hospital, but this has left patients with potentially less time to psychologically adjust.

In 2012, The Princess Royal Spinal Injuries unit, Sheffield, was involved in a pilot study, 'design and rehabilitation', undertaken by Sheffield Hallam University’s Lab4Living team supported by the Silvia Adams Trust and the RSA. This project builds on the pilot work, aiming to explore if a series of interactive workshops based on the principles of design thinking could allow patients with SCI to have a greater say in their own rehabilitation, and see what positive effect this could have in helping them deal with the life-changing effects of SCI.

In this talk we will give an overview of the project, the workshops and tools developed, along with final results and feedback from the SCI participants.
