Types of research degree

  • Masters level research degrees

    This research degree is suitable for those who would like to take a masters degree either as preparation to studying at PhD level or to gain subject-specific research skills for professional development. We currently offer masters by research courses in English, history and law.

  • MPhil

    You will critically investigate and evaluate an approved topic, demonstrate an understanding of appropriate research methods and present and defend a thesis by oral examination. 

    • 2 years full time
    • 3 years part time
  • PhD

    You will critically investigate and evaluate an approved topic, demonstrate an understanding of appropriate research methods and present and defend a thesis by oral examination. To be awarded a PhD you must make an independent and original contribution to knowledge.

    You can apply to develop your own research idea or for one of our advertised projects. If you have your own research idea, you can browse our research areas to find a potential supervisor.

    • 7 years part-time
  • Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

    This research-based doctorate is ideal for those people who are enthusiastic about learning and want to make a difference to the way that management and professional practice is developed in their specialism. Studying for a business doctorate allows you to develop evidence-based research and a full doctoral thesis, equivalent to a PhD, whilst continuing to pursue a career as a senior professional or manager.

    • 4-6 years
  • Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD)

    This course is designed for professionals who want to further develop their knowledge and practice. We support you to conduct advanced-level research in education, making an original contribution to knowledge in your chosen area. You deepen your understanding of education policy and practice, and produce a thesis which can help advance both your career and the field of education itself.
