The Turing Scheme, named after mathematician Alan Turing, is a global exchange programme which launched in 2021. It enables students from all backgrounds to choose to work, study or volunteer abroad during their studies.

During the 2022/23 academic year, hundreds of Sheffield Hallam students were able to access the funding to undertake an international study or work placement.

Chloe Twist, an events management student in Sheffield Business School, spent a semester at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Finland. During her time there she organised a three-day international hybrid event in Helsinki and helped to produce the Game Development World Championships Awards Show.

Chloe said: “Studying abroad is a life-changing experience, I know this sounds like a big claim but I genuinely believe it was life-changing.

“It allowed me to go out of my comfort zone, have amazing experiences, immerse myself in another culture, and make friends with people from all around the world.

“I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect when I first went on study abroad, but my time in Finland exceeded my expectations, and if I could do it all again I would.”

Joel Roebuck is a sport development with coaching student at Sheffield Hallam. He spent time in Fiji with the organisation Think Pacific.

Joel said: “Going to Fiji was the best decision I ever made. I learnt so much from the experience and now I have two families, only one is on the other side of the world.

“Being able to travel to another country on the other side of the world, independently and freely to learn, grow and develop as an individual has been so valuable for me. This was my first-time leaving England and couldn't have picked a better destination.

“The ability to teach and coach, watching the Fijian village we lived in grow was such a rewarding and special thing.”

Professor Sir Chris Husbands, Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, said: “Spending time in a different country is life-changing for students – expanding horizons, encouraging new ways of thinking and improving employment prospects.

“Through our partnerships with international organisations and institutions we have developed a significant number of global opportunities, which have a positive impact on our learning community.

“I am pleased the University has again received a significant amount of funding through the Turing Scheme to enable more of our students to gain invaluable international experiences during their time with us.”
