The A to Z of Pete McKee, on Wednesday 24 May, explored the inspirations and influences behind Pete’s work ahead of his next exhibition in November this year.
Known for celebrating all things Sheffield, Pete shared stories of his background and how his surroundings, family and community provided inspiration for his work.
He spoke about his initial steps into the art world, becoming a cartoonist and creating paintings using sample pots of emulsion paint on MDF board.
The audience also got an insight into some of his career highlights like creating ‘The Snog’ mural on Fagan’s pub and his large interactive exhibition ‘6 Weeks to Eternity’ which celebrated the school holidays in the 1970s.
Pete also told the stories of how he was able to collaborate with celebrities including Noel Gallagher and designer Paul Smith, after gifting his work to them and hoping they would get in touch.
In 2019, Pete was given an honorary doctorate by Sheffield Hallam for his contribution to Sheffield's cultural history.
Pete said: “I’m really proud to be connected with Hallam University through my honorary doctorate and it’s great to get the chance to share my experience as an artist with Hallam students and the general public as I take them hopefully on an entertaining journey through my life and career so far.”
Roger Bateman, Head of Art & Design at Sheffield Hallam University, said: “Pete’s work is hugely relatable, he’s a storyteller, quick witted and surgically observant. We see ourselves, our families, friends and strangers in his work, his work is deeply social and yet also deeply personal.
“I’m hugely proud that Pete is an Honorary Doctor and a member of our esteemed community, and I am really looking forward to what we do together next.”
The event took place during Sheffield Hallam’s Future Now festival of creativity, which features exhibitions across the city showcasing the work of Hallam’s graduating students.
