Baroness Helena Kennedy

Baroness Kennedy, a leading barrister and internationally renowned human rights champion, will leave the role in July 2024 after six years of service.

Baroness Kennedy has a well-established relationship with Sheffield Hallam, as a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate in 2014 and the patron of its world-leading Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice, which opened in 2015. She will continue to work closely with colleagues in the Centre, championing the work of staff and students.

Baroness Kennedy said: “I have loved being Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam. Education changes lives. It certainly changed mine and I love that Hallam gives that opportunity to people like me.

“I did not come from a background of privilege, but I loved learning and education took me on an amazing journey in my own life. Higher Education is preparation for all that comes next.

“There is something so energising about being with the young at this stage and they are our future hope. I also met wonderful teachers at Hallam, who brought excitement to their subjects and enthused their students.

“Graduation ceremonies are the times when I feel quite emotional about my role and incredibly proud of the whole university. Conferring degrees, which have meant so much dedication and hard work, always gives me a lump in my throat. It is seeing new generations take joy in their success and sharing the pride with their families. That is exhilarating.”
Baroness Kennedy is passionate about education for all and, as chair of the Further Education Commission into Widening Participation, she produced the Kennedy Report which led to changes in government policy in further education.

Her significant work for women in the legal profession has led to serious reforms on access and greater representation of women at senior levels in practice and in the judiciary. An advocate for the arts and literature, Baroness Kennedy served as chair of the British Council from 2004 to 2009 and as a judge for literary awards including the Man Booker Prize.

Sheffield Hallam University Professor Liz Mossop said: “I’d like to thank Baroness Kennedy for all she’s done during her six years as Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University.

“She is a pioneer in her field and we are delighted that she will continue to be involved with the University through the world-leading Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice.”

Nomination process

The University is now starting the nominations process for its next Chancellor, the ceremonial head of the University who acts as a figurehead and an ambassador of the University.

Nominations are open until 3 May with staff, students, alumni and the local community able to submit a nomination
