Sheffield Hallam University is partnering with Sheffield City Council to introduce a food waste trial scheme to better understand the process of household food disposal across selected areas of Sheffield.

It comes ahead of all areas of England being required by law to provide a weekly food waste recycling service.

Over 8,000 households across Sheffield have been selected to take part in the weekly food waste recycling trial. Participants will be given a food caddy to collect food waste, rolls of caddy liners and an outside food waste bin. 

Sheffield Business School researchers are looking for participants of the food waste trial scheme to take part in the accompanying research project.

Dr Pallavi Singh, senior lecturer in marketing and leading researcher on the project, said: “The aim of our research is to examine the extent to which households engage in the food waste recycling process and question if or what customer value is derived from household food waste disposal.”

The trial areas are Woodseats, Meersbrook, Norton Lees, Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, Burncross, Arbourthorne, Gleadless Valley and Darnall.

The trial is to last for 12 weeks and will allow the best possible service to be provided when a permanent, city-wide food waste recycling service is introduced.
