The chemistry programmes went through a rigorous peer-reviewed process of certification against the RSC’s framework, with the report highlighting ‘very happy, engaged students who commended the approachability of the staff’; the chemistry department’s proactive engagement with external examiners; and its analytical provision, stating the ‘chemistry content taught has a strong analytical strand and the equipment seen on the visit was vast’.
A Royal Society of Chemistry accredited chemistry degree is a mark of assurance that it meets specific standards used by the profession. It provides individuals with the knowledge, skills and competence required to progress their chemistry career. Sheffield Hallam’s newly accredited courses include:
- BSc (Hons) Chemistry
- BSc (Hons) Chemistry (with a placement year)
- MChem (Chemistry)
- MSc Analytical Chemistry
- MSc Pharmaceutical Analysis
- MRes Analytical Chemistry
- MRes Pharmaceutical Analysis
The news comes ahead of A-levels results day (Thursday 18 August), and Sheffield Hallam biosciences and chemistry courses places are currently available through clearing.
Dr Tom Bassindale, professional lead for chemistry and forensic science at Sheffield Hallam University, said: “We are really pleased the hard work developing our courses and supporting our chemistry students has paid off with a clean sweep of accreditations from the Royal Society of Chemistry. It is great to get the external acknowledgement that we offer a high-quality experience to our students. The redeveloped MChem and MRes courses give students a real research experience in our world class research labs. Students spend an academic year working on research problems that have real impact, whether that be on food production, sustainable chemistry or forensic science. All students coming to Sheffield Hallam to study these courses have a great student experience supported by friendly academics and leave with a bright future ahead in the chemical sciences.”
The accreditation also means Sheffield Hallam students and staff now qualify for a range of benefits including reduced rates to become members of the Royal Society of Chemistry, which provides access to networks, publications, careers support and more.
The Royal Society of Chemistry works to advance excellence, connect chemical scientists and shape the future of the chemical sciences for the benefit of humanity.
