Arthur Humberstone (1912 – 1999) was a British animator, artist and director. The exhibition includes archive material and artwork from his time as a lead animator on films like Animal Farm (1954), Yellow Submarine (1968) and Watership Down (1978).

The archive is managed by two Sheffield Hallam University graduates, Nigel and Klive Humberstone, it preserves materials from their father’s successful career in animation, from training at Gaumont British Animation, to working on numerous prominent projects over the years.

The exhibition has been designed by 3rd year Graphic Design students from Sheffield Hallam University.

Nigel and Klive, said: “We are really excited to be presenting this exhibition in Sheffield, a city that our father lived and worked in, and a place that we have both adopted as our home after graduation.

“Inheriting such an important collection of material is as daunting as it is rewarding – but we’re pleased that we can share so many insights into the history of art and animation.”

Arthur Humberstone's influence can be seen in the vast collection of pre-production materials from his 45-year career. The archive shows how much he impacted the visuals of animals in animation while also giving us more insight into animation history.

Members of the public can visit the exhibition for free at the Post Hall Gallery, inside the Head Post Office building on Fitzalan Square, from Saturday 8 March to Saturday 5 April.
