What to do during a fire alarm

Fire alarm communication – September 2024

City Campus, linked buildings (Atrium, Harmer, Howard, Norfolk, Owen and Surrey)

On hearing any fire alarm (continuous or intermittent) you must leave the building immediately and make your way to ultimate safety outside and away from the building.

All staff are responsible for prompt evacuation of guests, students and visitors who are with them when the alarm is raised. The following good practice should be adhered to when vacating buildings:

  • Stop what you are doing, react quickly but do not run.
  • In workshops, laboratories and catering areas - switch off/isolate equipment if it is safe to do so.
  • Do not stop to collect belongings.
  • Close any doors as you pass through them to slow the spread of fire.
  • Do not use lifts, always take the stairs, if you cannot use the stairs go to a 'refuge point' which will be indicated by signs and use the call/answer button on the refuge communication equipment.
  • Go to the Fire Assembly Point (Fire Assembly point map.)
  • Do not re-enter the building until instructed that it's safe to do so by SHU Security or the Fire and Rescue Service.

Take a moment to think about how you would escape from where you are – it could save your life.

You must know your escape routes, as in the event of a real fire you may only have a short time to evacuate the building. It is important to have a plan:

  • Have a primary escape route that you will use.
  • Also think about a secondary escape route, in case your first choice is blocked.
  • Escape routes should be kept free from any obstructions, slip or trip hazards at all times. If you have any concerns that one is blocked. please report it to your departmental health and safety coordinator or the Health and Safety Service.
