Information for carers, care leavers and students estranged from their families.

Here you will find information about the support available to students who:

  • have caring responsibilities,
  • have been in local authority care, and/or
  • are estranged from family.

We understand these circumstances may create additional barriers to studying and have, therefore, created guides to help you find the right resources and support for your situation.

Support for applicants

SHU Progress provides support for applicants whose personal circumstances might mean there are barriers to going to university. Carers, care leavers, and estranged students are all eligible for this support.

The scheme provides additional support throughout your application process, from the year you choose to apply to university through to becoming a university student.

Support with moving on

Leaving university can be a stressful and challenging time, especially when you have been studying without family support. However, there are many services and organisations that can support you once you have left university.

Our moving on guide is designed to help you find the right service for a particular issue, as you leave university and make the transition to independent living.
